All the Great composers are marvellous: Mozart, Brahms, Dvorak, Sibelius, etc; but Anton Bruckner came along at a critical time in my life about 40 years ago - just, as it so happens, as he began to achieve greater recognition in this country. So, it's not that he's necessarily greater than the others, just more significant to me personally. I remember the scherzo of the Seventh symphony buzzing in my head when out in the fields one day - as if I was discovering (re-discovering) something that I already knew... It seemed to be 'my' music. Then, like breakers from the ocean, other works, such as the 'Romantic' Symphony, the Third, and the Eighth, fell upon the shore in quick succession. They changed my life, my view of the Universe, myself, leaving me breathless, awestruck, yet, for all that, empowered. |
